Opportunity

Saft’s premium lithium-ion (Li-ion) technology proves ideal for the SmartRegion Pellworm project. This project allows Pellworm Island to increase its energy autonomy through enhanced integration of renewable resources into an already congested distribution grid. It will enable a higher level of self-consumption, flexible load management and improved control technology. The island located off the North Sea coast of Germany generates electricity from wind, solar photovoltaic and combined heat and power, yet still relies on subsea cables to connect to the mainland grid.

Approach

Saft’s Intensium® Max 20 system provides 1MW of positive and negative “minutes to hours” flexibility contributing to the E.ON hybrid energy storage scheme for Pellworm. The Li-ion solution provided by Saft has 560kWh of energy storage and is delivered in a standardized 20-foot container for easy transportation and installation. Saft’s containerized approach integrates the communications interface, battery management and cooling and fire prevention systems. With Saft’s proven Li-ion technology, the system ensures long calendar and cycle life, with an expected operating life of at least 15 years. E.ON sees energy storage as a key innovation to improve the grid performance and integration of renewable energy. Li-ion batteries are one of the most important technologies in this sector and Pellworm Island is a crucial lighthouse project that will enable evaluation of how Li-ion technology can operate in real-world situations to make smart grids even smarter.

Results

The Saft energy storage system (ESS) installation enables E.ON to demonstrate the technical, financial and community advantages of energy storage within a smart grid. Saft’s involvement in the project provides an extensive demonstration of storage solutions in different operational modes. It also details analysis and practical implementation of future business models based on ESS. The Li-ion technology provided by Saft relieves the load on the island’s network structure and upstream electricity grids, while increasing energy autonomy. This project helps establish a strong community engagement through demand management and contributes to the development of a storage blueprint in a future decentralized energy system.
