Energy Storage Policy Forum 2015

The Energy Storage Association (ESA) will be hosted its first ever Energy Storage Policy Forum on January 29, 2015 in Washington , DC.  This Forum will brought together ESA members and allies with energy industry thought leaders, regulators and policymakers for a full-day of collaborative discussions which will shape industry advocacy nationwide. This unique interactive event provided both the opportunity to hear from decision makers from across the country, and also the opportunity to collaborate with industry peers to affect the policy and advocacy strategies of the energy storage industry.

Participants gained a better understanding of the current state of federal and state regulatory and legislative activities through though-provoking presentations:

  • Learn about the EPA's rulemaking process and actions that states might take in developing implementation plans from Joseph Goffman, Associate Assistant Administrator and Senior Counsel, EPA Office of Air and Radiation
  • Hear about the current state of energy storage policy in the United States Senate from Senator Mazie Hirono (HI), who serves on the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources
  • Understand the ground-breaking report released in 2014 from Oncor that analyzes the value of distributed energy storage to consumers and the grid in Texas from Hannes Pfeifenberger, Principal, Brattle Group
  • Learn about ESA policy activities, overarching energy storage challenges and opportunities for ESA leadership with a discussion between Kansas State Representative Tom Sloan; Praveen Kathpal, Vice President, AES Energy Storage; and Todd Olinsky-Paul, Project Director, Clean Energy States Alliance
  • Understand the regulators' action on energy storage policy and regulatory actions that have been taken to open up markets for innovation in energy storage with a discussion between Commissioner Bob Burns, Arizona Corporation Commission Commissioner; Commissioner Jeanne Fox, New Jersey Board of Public Utilities; and former Commissioner Jeff Goltz, Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission

This event featured a number of collaborative breakout sessions and a two-way dialogue with the advocates that are on the ground in the states and working in the halls of Congress to institute effective policy solutions to create fair and competitive markets for energy storage. This event was a powerful forum to ensure your company’s voice is heard and that you can have an impact on the overarching vision of the industry and the direction of the Energy Storage Association’s advocacy efforts.
