  • RES Begins Construction of EDP Renewables’ Hog Creek Wind Project

    Broomfield, CO – Renewable Energy Systems (RES), a leader in the development, construction, and operation of wind, solar, transmission, and energy storage projects in the Americas, is pleased to announce that construction has begun on the Hog Creek Wind Project located in Hardin County, OH. The project, owned by EDP Renewables (EDPR), is on schedule to be operational before the end of 2017 and will provide enough clean electricity to power approximately 19,000 Ohio homes. RES completed the project development and transferred Hog Creek wind project ownership to EDPR in 2017.

    Last week the Department of Energy issued its much-anticipated Staff Report to the Secretary on Electricity Markets and Reliability, in the shadow of the August 21 eclipse and right before Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Houston. The main takeaways of the report were clear: in the midst of a rapidly changing energy mix, much more needs to be done to reform electricity markets to incorporate the significant value of resiliency and flexibility into markets.

  • Eclipse 2017: Grid Operators Make the Extraordinary Rather Boring (ESA Blog)


    I think it’s safe to say that across the U.S. people are gearing up for the rare total solar eclipse next week, getting their plans in place, buying proper viewing glasses, and reading up on the celestial phenomenon.

    Many of us have been planning for days or weeks, but grid operators and utilities have been preparing for this event for much longer – and energy storage systems are going to play a meaningful role on August 21, just as they do every day of the year.

    Around the moment the moon is directly in the path of the sun (covering up to 70% of the sun’s rays), areas with high concentrations of solar power may see a dip in production across the country lasting about two hours. The two main regions of the country that will be impacted the most are California and North Carolina, both solar energy leaders in the US.

    And while the eclipse itself is rather rare – the next total eclipse passing over the U.S. will be in 2024 – for utilities, their obligation to serve continues unabated.

    Our electric grid is a constant balancing act, with supply and demand changing every second of every day. Grid operators and utilities are tasked with ensuring that supply and demand are in balance at all times, using all resources at their disposal to deliver reliable and affordable power for everyone.

  • NM Commission Unanimously Approves Amending Rule to Include Energy Storage

    SANTA FE – The New Mexico Public Regulation Commission (NMPRC) on Wednesday, August 2 – after listening to testimony gathered from public hearings held over the course of several weeks – voted unanimously to amend a Commission Rule that further moves New Mexico toward advanced technology regarding the storing of renewable energy.

  • Highview Awarded £1.5 Million For New Hybrid LAES System To Respond To Frequency Response Market

    Highview have been awarded funding of £1.5 million for a new hybrid configuration of its existing Liquid Air Energy Storage (LAES) system from Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency.  The hybrid LAES system will demonstrate LAES’s ability to respond to grid frequency events within 1 second and meet the requirements of National Grid’s new Enhanced Frequency Response (EFR) service.
