Vice President of External Affairs

The Vice President of External Affairs will work with the CEO and Executive Team to develop the strategic direction for ESA, and increase support for the inclusion of energy storage in markets throughout the United States. S/he will provide strategic vision and leadership for ESA’s overall brand, as well as provide direction in leadership of the events, marketing, and communications teams. S/he is a member of the Executive Team, will be committed to our Core Values, and reports to ESA’s CEO. As a member of Executive Team, this position participates in the overall organizational strategy, management, and policy formation.

  • Events: the events team is responsible for the successful strategic planning, execution and logistics of all ESA events, including the Annual Conference, Policy Forum, Energy Storage STUDIO, and webinars.
  • Marketing: the marketing team is responsible for ESA visual identity in print and digital media, including ESA’s online presence through the website and social media outlets, as well as successful outreach and promotion of ESA events.
  • Communications: the Communications Team is responsible for overall ESA messaging in print and digital media, as well as management of all public and media communications.

Key Responsibilities:

Management

  • Lead and sustain the External Affairs team resources to include staff recruitment, professional development and retention, workplans, and timelines;
  • Serve as a member of the Executive Team, providing input on short- and long-term strategic, management, policy and operational plans;
  • Provide input and leadership in the design, implementation and evaluation of short and long-term communications and marketing strategies that increase ESA brand recognition as the national trade association for energy storage, and encourage competitive markets and inclusive regulatory frameworks.
  • Oversee the external relations budget, which includes events, marketing and communications.

Events

  • Work collaboratively with the CEO and Board of Director’s Programs & Events Committee to establish a comprehensive event strategy that supports ESA’s mission.
  • Expand upon the successes of current ESA events through strategic planning, outreach and promotion, execution and logistics of the Annual Conference, Policy Forum, and the Energy Storage STUDIO.
  • Develop and implement a speakers’ bureau for other industry events.
  • Drive event-related partnerships with industry allies, government agencies, and other stakeholders.

Marketing

  • Ensure that ESA maintains an online presence and social media strategy that keeps pace with the field and advances ESA’s mission.
  • Develop and update ESA collateral materials for the various stakeholders of the organization: policymakers, ESA members, media, public and other stakeholders.
  • Oversee the successful development, launch and maintenance of the public-facing and members-only ESA website.

Communications

  • Direct the development of an external communications strategy that proactively communicates the issues of importance to ESA’s mission, informs stakeholders of the benefits of energy storage, and increases awareness ESA’s work and the progress of our members.
  • Develop and maintain overarching messaging, as well as conduct and manage targeted messaging campaigns, ensuring that ESA is well represented in local, national and industry trade media outlets.
  • Serve as an ESA spokesperson as necessary.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field
  • Minimum 5-10 years of experience in the energy sector
  • Familiarity with the current federal, RTO and state energy policy landscape
  • Familiarity with the energy storage industry
  • Progressive responsibility in the areas of public policy and communications
  • Demonstrated success in achieving strategic goals in collaboration with, or through management of, staff across functional departments
  • Outstanding written and verbal communications skills
  • Ability to develop and manage a departmental budget
  • Experience working with a small team
  • An innovative and creative thinker
  • A positive attitude and aptitude for collaboration
  • A passion for the mission of ESA and a strong desire to impact our growing organization
  • Ability to travel domestically up to 20% of the time

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in the related fields of energy storage or the energy industry; or in functional scope of marketing, communications or event management
  • Experience communicating with both lay and technical audiences
  • Experience facilitating communications among a network of allied organizations
