ESA Statement on FERC Nomination

“We are greatly encouraged by President Biden’s nomination of D.C.’s Public Service Commission Chair Willie Phillips to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission,” said Jason Burwen, Interim CEO, U.S. Energy Storage Association (ESA). “As a leader in advancing the District’s 100% renewable energy goal and in working through innovative regulatory approaches to local electric grid planning, Chair Phillips has demonstrated that he is a regulator who will work to ensure policy keeps pace with technology. FERC has a number of important issues to resolve—updating rules for hybrid resources, reforming market designs to better enable flexibility, ensuring distributed resource aggregations can participate in markets, making a place for energy storage and other grid-enhancing technologies in transmission planning, and more. ESA is confident that a FERC with Chair Phillips on it will accelerate the Storage Decade ahead and lead to a modernized power system that provides reliable, equitable and affordable electric service for all Americans. We respectfully ask Congress to swiftly confirm his appointment in the coming weeks and restore FERC to a full bench to avert any further delays in this critical work.”
