ESA Statement on House Passage of the Build Back Better Act

“The House of Representatives vote passing the Build Back Better Act (BBBA) is the closest our country has ever come to taking action on climate change at the scale needed to create a better future. House Democrats have risen to the moment to approve legislation that would rapidly decarbonize our power system, increase the resilience of frontline communities to extreme weather, and spread jobs and prosperity through an industrial renaissance.

ESA is particularly supportive of enacting the included investment tax credit for energy storage, which enables our industry to accelerate deployments on the pace needed to decarbonize the power system by 2035, as President Biden has called for. Combined with advanced manufacturing incentives, enactment of this legislation would create the stable, long-term demand signal needed to not only supercharge the clean energy transition but also build a robust energy storage supply chain that supports good-paying jobs across diverse communities here at home. Moreover, the ability for companies and households to elect direct payment of the investment tax credit is critical to making its benefits equally accessible to all, regardless of tax status.

It’s now Senate Democrats’ turn to meet this landmark moment. ESA and its members urge the Senate to move the Build Back Better Act expeditiously to passage with the directly payable clean energy and storage tax credits. This once-in-a-generation legislation will allow us to say, finally, the U.S. took bold and necessary action to lead the global fight against climate change and make a better future possible for our communities, country, and planet.”  — Jason Burwen, Interim CEO of the U.S. Energy Storage Association (ESA)
