Creating a Domestic Supply Chain for Advanced Batteries

Original Webinar Date/Time:

Wednesday, March 10, 2021
1:00 – 2:00 PM ET / 10:00 AM PT – 11:00 AM PT

Analysts agree that the U.S. demand for energy storage will increase dramatically over the next decade, particularly Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries for both electric vehicles (EVs) and stationary grid applications.  At present most of these batteries and components are manufactured in Asia using raw materials from non-U.S. sources.  Thus, the major strands of the supply chain emanate from foreign countries.

The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 exposed some of the weak links in those international supply chains.  Other issues involving international trade, economic development and national security also implicate battery supply chains, along with concerns over environmental impacts and labor conditions in some supplier countries.  As a result, there is growing, widespread and bipartisan interest in developing domestic U.S. sources for raw materials, processing, manufacturing and recycling capability to augment and ultimately displace foreign supplies.  For example, enhancing domestic supply capability is a centerpiece of the DOE Energy Storage Grand Challenge initiative.

This webinar will examine the state of U.S. supply capability and demand projections for batteries, the potential domestic resource base, and describe the economic conditions and policies that could stimulate the development of domestic capability.  The presenters include speakers from Wood Mackenzie, a market data and analytics consultant and Enovix, a supplier building a battery production facility in California.
